Kabutemba is a remote village located 90 kms from Kampala on Masaka Road. It has a population of about 3,000 people and is fast growing. Before the church and school were constructed way back in 2013, the nearest school was some 5 kms away. The nearest health centres are at Kanoni, some 12 kms away and Kalagi, about 6-8 kms away.
Attending school then and seeking medical attention was very difficult for the community due long distances. The Late PAG Robinah Lutaaya and her Late spouse (RIP), awakened the Rotary Club of Bukoto to the plight of this remote village. One Sunday they were invited to a church service; prayers were being held under a big mango tree as there was no church! The Lutaayas took this as their calling and they constructed a church - St Peter’s Church, Kabutemba for that community. This church became the epicentre of activity in this village. Each corner of the church housed a class; children were now able to attend school.
The Late PAG Robinah Lutaaya, brought this village’s plight to the Club. The Club donated a water tank; it soon became apparent that this was a lifeline for the community as well. It became a water collecting point not only for the school and church but for the community as well. Seeing the situation, the Club resolved to adopt this village under the Rotary “Adopt a Village” Project. School construction commenced in 2013 and since then each President has constructed a block! The school now boasts of 7 classes (P1-7), Head Teacher’s office, 8 units of teachers’ accommodation, a hall and a library. The nursery section has been constructed by the Rotaract Club of Bukoto.
The current situation of toilet facilities is wanting: the school population is fast growing (currently 200 pupils) but they share a 2 stance toilet, 1 for boys and 1 for girls. This is the justification for the construction of the health centre and the need for more and better toilet facilities.
Water is another serious problem faced by the population in the area. The nearest borehole to the school is about 1 km away and it also serves the neighbouring villages. Despite the school having water tanks, they dry up quickly due to the number of users. Thus there is crowding at the borehole culminating in time wastage just to collect water. The WASH project is meant to address this problem for the school, health centre and surrounding communities.
Project Goals:
The recently held Needs Assessment with the community, confirms that a medical facility and access to clean water remain the highest priority of the communities around.
